Universum de fabulis

When translated from Latin, Universum de fabulis, means ‘A Universe of stories’.

I chose to give my piece this name as I believe that each individual in this universe is a complex creature that cannot be simply penned down as one single thing. They have multiple sides, faces, moods, emotions, personalities, likes, dislikes, abilities, hobbies etc and are, within themselves, a universe of their own.

For this piece, I asked a range of participants from classmates and teachers to the school housekeeping and security staff and people outside the school to indicate what they believe is ‘their presence in the universe’ through the use of a dot of any size and colour which reflects them. Each dot can be interpreted in several different ways – for example the colour of the dot tells us a lot about the mindset and emotional state of the person, the size their humility or self-esteem, the position (far from the centre of the universe or close?, far or close to other dots?) and the shape (is it hollow, is it a perfect circle, an odd shape?).

Just like a person, each dot tells a story of its own and the universe is filled with infinite people with infinite stories to tell.
